Who makes the decisions for A̱ka̱la?

The Board of Directors governs and manages the affairs of the Society. The Board has the powers of the Society, except as stated in the Societies Act. The Board of Directors is the legislative and executive body of the Society and may exercise all powers of the Society that are granted under Provincial statute, subject to these bylaws

Do you have to be Musgamakw Dzawada̱’enux̱w to be on the Board of Directors?

Yes. You have to self-identify as Musgamakw Dzawada̱’enux̱w to sit on the Board of Directors.

How do I apply to be on the Board of Directors?

Please fill out this form to apply to be on the Board of Directors. We elect new Board members at each Annual General Meeting.

Youth Leadership Paddle Program

Does this program cost money?

No. The program is delivered at NO COST to the participant.

Are transportation costs covered?

All transportation is covered from Port McNeill to program start/end location. Please get in touch with our Program Coordinator, info@akalasociety.com, to sort through travel plans to/from Port McNeill. We do our best to cover costs to Port McNeill. The sooner we know where you are traveling from, the better chances are that we will have the budget to cover the costs.

How long is the program?

The program ranges between 7 – 13 days.

Do I need prior paddling experience to join?

No, prior experience is not necessary. However, we do offer a Thrill and a Chill version that are different in intensity.

What is the difference between the Chill and the Thrill programs?

The Thrill program is generally longer distance, longer in length, and more focused on outdoor-skills development. The Chill is a lower intensity with less distance covered and more focused on relationship-building.

What do I need to pack?

Women and Gender-Diverse Canoe Journey

I am a trans-woman, can I join this program?

Absolutely. This program is open to any Musgamakw Dzawada̱’enux̱w person who identifies as a trans-woman, non-binary, gender non-conforming, agender, and two-spirit.

Will there be a Men and Gender-Diverse Canoe Journey?

Yes, we are currently searching for funding that will support this program.

Is there an age limit?

No. We are open to having people of all ages on trip with us. If you have concerns, please get in touch with us, info@akalasociety.com.

How long is the journey?

The journey is 8-days, however, we do try to accommodate people to join for less time.
