What We Do

Our purpose is to create land and water-based educational opportunities for Musgamakw Dzawada̱’enux̱w citizens.

The A̱ka̱la vision statement is as follows:

A̱ka̱la cultivates spaces for all Musgamakw Dzawada̱’enux̱w to empower a deep sense of belonging, identity, and connection. Through immersive programs, we clear the path set out by our ancestors, grounded in our values, laws, roles, and teachings. We aim to provide everyone with the freedom to belong, contribute, and thrive in joyful abundance.

The A̱ka̱la mission statement is as follows:

In all we do, we embrace the joy of being Musgamakw Dzawada̱’enux̱w—creating spaces where cultural expression is not only safe, but celebrated. We facilitate holistic, culturally informed programming, leadership training and certifications in outdoor education and safety. Our sinat guides our work to support connection to land, each other, and self through a̱wi’nagwis-based learning on our ancestral territories.

The A̱ka̱la value statement is as follows:

A̱ka̱la Outdoor Education Society is guided by the Musgamakw Dzawada̱’enux̱w law of maya̱’xa̱la, a word that does not have an English language counterpart, but is akin to respect and reciprocity. Within maya̱’xa̱la are values of gratitude and spirituality. We continue to learn how to weave maya̱’xa̱la into our lives and programs, and understand that this will be a lifelong journey. No matter where you are in your understanding and practice of maya̱’xa̱la, you are welcome to join the A̱ka̱la ‘na̱myut.
